Lenovo Sells New Servers Without Moving Your Business Apps

On September 16 Lenovo announced new servers you can put under the applications you already run. Mail, finance, and SAP can stay on VMware or Hyper-V. A move to new virtualization software is optional and separate.

You can put new servers under the applications you already run. AI-ready in this release means spare capacity, data you can restore, and a management view of those hosts.

Companies still run mail, finance, SAP, and desktop pools as virtual machines. A virtual machine is a full computer that shares one physical box with other virtual machines. The software that splits that box is the hypervisor. VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix, Red Hat, and SUSE are names for that layer.

Physical servers reach the end of their refresh cycle. Some teams also evaluate a new hypervisor when they review licenses. Moving applications, training operators, and rebuilding backup is a separate body of work that takes months.

On September 16 Lenovo announced new hardware that customers can buy now and pair with software at their own pace. Scott Patti, who runs Lenovo’s infrastructure group, said customers want newer, more reliable machines and still want a choice of software.

One new server for rooms packed with virtual machines

The new machine is the ThinkAgile VX850 V4. It is a 2U box, which means it takes two units of rack height. Lenovo says it can hold two or four Intel Xeon 6 processors and is meant for busy virtual machine rooms, large databases, analytics, and SAP HANA. It can also take two large graphics cards.

ThinkAgile VX remains Lenovo’s VMware-oriented line. The same generation of hardware now also ships with other software already tested on it.

Five ready-made combinations so your team starts from a tested stack

Lenovo calls these Express Solutions. Each one is a Lenovo server plus a software platform that Lenovo and the software vendor have already tested together. The public list is Microsoft Hyper-V with Windows Server, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Azure Local on ThinkAgile MX V4, Nutanix Compute Cluster on ThinkSystem, and SUSE Virtualization on ThinkSystem V4.

Microsoft Hyper-V and Windows Server cover shops that stay in the Microsoft world. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization runs virtual machines next to container apps. Azure Local on ThinkAgile MX V4 lets you run Azure-style operations on machines you keep in your own room. Nutanix on ThinkSystem is for shops that want Nutanix’s management tools. SUSE Virtualization on ThinkSystem V4 is the open path for virtual machines and containers.

Lenovo can put the server, the tested combination, and the install on one quote. The software entitlement still sits with the platform vendor. For VMware that vendor is Broadcom. For the other four paths it is Microsoft, Red Hat, Nutanix, or SUSE. Ask procurement to show both lines so the hardware refresh and the software renewal do not get treated as one decision.

A tested combination gets the new box running so your team can spend its time on applications and operations.

Storage and XClarity belong on the same order as the server

Lenovo put ThinkSystem storage and ThinkAgile hyperconverged kits in the same announcement as the new server. The company says those arrays and nodes support virtualized rooms, split compute-and-storage designs, and recovery after ransomware. Review the arrays that will hold the copies of those applications when you review the new hosts.

XClarity Controller 3 sits on the box. XClarity One is the cloud-style console that watches many boxes. Lenovo says the pair gives a standards-based view so a mixed room of ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile gear can be patched and checked in one place. Ask whether the new VX850 V4 nodes show up in the XClarity One instance you already run before you sign the hardware order.

Three install packages take a rack from delivery to a live system

Lenovo grouped its install work into three packages for supported ThinkSystem servers, storage, and ThinkAgile kits.

Standard Deploy is a readiness check and someone on site to put the hardware in the rack. Use it when your own team can finish the software work. Premier Deploy adds remote setup, documents, and a handoff. Premier Deploy Plus puts Lenovo people on site, keeps them available for 30 days after users go live, and includes a health check within a year. Lenovo says that health check does not cover the DE Storage Array.

Match the package to how much help you want after the first login. Teams that already build these systems can stay on Standard. Sites that want extra coverage through the first month can budget for Plus.

What Lenovo means by an AI-ready foundation

Lenovo ties this package to later artificial intelligence work. The products here are newer hosts, storage that can restore data, and a management plane that can see those hosts. That is the foundation. Models, prompts, and agents still need an application owner, a data pipeline, and often graphics cards.

I wrote about Lenovo’s CPU-only inference pitch in June. This September package is the floor under that work: current servers and data you can bring back after an incident.

Lenovo’s infrastructure group already turned a full-year profit after years of growing the server business. I covered that in May. A refresh that lets customers keep their software is a direct follow-on to that hardware business.

Stay on the software you have and buy new boxes, or test one new path on a ready-made Lenovo combination. Check storage, XClarity, and the software contract on the same review.

Ask which software you will still patch in 18 months

Ask the people who run virtualization which software they will still support a year and a half from now. Ask storage whether the new hosts will write to arrays that can restore after ransomware. Ask operations whether XClarity One already sees the model you are about to buy. Then ask the hardware vendor which of the five paths matches that list, and which install package they will staff in your region.

Use the ready-made combination when you want the new box to start on a known stack. Keep application testing on the project plan next to that purchase.

CIO question

Which software will this company still run under mail, finance, and SAP in 18 months, and do storage, management, and the software contract sit on the same page as the new server?
