The Connection Layer Just Became the Control Layer. Boomi Isn't Competing on Connectors Anymore

Boomi Has Already Won the Connection Game. Now They Are Winning on Convergence.

Boomi's strategic clarity has sharpened under Steve Lucas. The company realised early what many integration vendors are still learning: being the connection layer is valuable only if you can orchestrate convergence across agents, metadata, and governance. Recent announcements show them moving decisively on all three fronts.

The Connection Platform They Built

Boomi connects with everything. That is not a marketing claim. It is a function of architectural choices made over years. Distributed runtime, hybrid-cloud flexibility, and hundreds of native connectors define the platform. The foundation is solid and comprehensive.

The fundamental positioning as an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) vendor gives Boomi an advantage that pure metadata management vendors or enterprise search platforms do not have. They sit at the point where data moves between systems. That physical position in the architecture, the connection layer, is difficult to replicate or displace once established.

Convergence: Agents, Metadata, and Governance

This is where the Lucas-era Boomi separates itself from the pack. The company has transitioned from simple connectivity to data activation, positioning itself as a platform that integrates, governs, and orchestrates AI agents at scale.

Boomi Meta Hub brings semantic context and governance to agent decision-making. Announced in March 2026, Meta Hub extends Boomi's master data management capabilities to provide unified semantic meaning across the enterprise. Rather than passive metadata catalogues, Meta Hub is active—it teaches agents what data means. This addresses a fundamental constraint: agents require consistent, governed context to avoid hallucination and to reason correctly across disconnected systems. By integrating diverse metadata into a centralised governance framework, Meta Hub ensures that AI agents and business users operate on the same definitions and rules, whether describing a customer identifier in an ERP system or a contact record in a CRM.

Boomi Agentstudio is the control plane for agents regardless of where they were built. Launched in March 2025, Agentstudio includes the Agent Control Tower—a unified management interface that supports agents from Salesforce Agentforce, Amazon Bedrock, Snowflake Cortex, and Microsoft Copilot, as well as Boomi's own Agent Garden. Rather than building the best agent platform, Boomi is positioning itself as the operating system for managing agents across the enterprise. The Agent Control Tower provides lifecycle management, monitoring, observability, and governance for deployed agents at scale, with features including anomaly detection, centralised policy enforcement, and role-based access control.

The European Platform Instance addresses the regulatory imperative directly and concretely. Announced in March 2026 with availability in the same month, Boomi's new regionally independent European platform instance ensures that customer data, metadata, and runtime execution remain within European boundaries in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For multinational organisations, this means localising both data processing and control plane operations, allowing physical custody of data to remain with the customer. This approach differs fundamentally from vendors that establish separate geographically isolated clouds: Boomi's distributed runtime architecture allows the integration engine to execute on customer premises, in private clouds, or in region-specific public cloud instances, giving organisations genuine control over where their data is processed.

The Data Integration Expansion

One detail in the strategy merits expansion: Boomi's focus on SAP data movement, accelerated by the acquisition of Rivery in December 2024. Rivery, a data integration specialist founded in 2019, brought cutting-edge Change Data Capture (CDC) and Extract-Load-Transform (ELT) capabilities to the Boomi platform. SAP data structures are dense and complex; Change Data Capture requires understanding transaction logs, update mechanisms, and real-time replication patterns at scale. With Rivery now part of Boomi's core offering—rebranded as Boomi Data Integration—the platform provides no-code and low-code data pipeline construction with a focus on streaming data movement for both analytics and AI use cases.

The expanded SAP Data Connector (now powered by Rivery's CDC engine) addresses a practical constraint: AI agents have an appetite for high-quality, large-scale, real-time data. Boomi has removed the barrier between transactional SAP data and the broader agentic ecosystem by enabling organisations to build ELT pipelines with minimal custom development.

Executive Take: The Competitive Widening

The strategy is powerful because it shows a company with a coherent point of view about what data-driven, AI-enabled organisations actually need. They do not need faster integrations. They need the ability to move data through systems with governance, context, and confidence.

The vendors competing with Boomi on individual features will find themselves on the back foot. The vendors trying to compete with Boomi on the convergence it has built—connection, metadata, agent governance, and compliance—will find themselves building in multiple directions at once. This is always slower than refining a coherent strategy.

For technology leaders, the evaluation question is simple. Which vendor can let me deploy agents in production with confidence that they will reason correctly, stay within governance boundaries, and comply with regulatory obligations? Boomi is building the platform that addresses all three at once.
