AI applications are being probed by autonomous hacking agents right now. Wiz, now part of Google Cloud, has announced products that directly address this risk. Here is what business leaders need to understand.
I am not a security analyst. But I spend a lot of time thinking about how artificial intelligence is reshaping enterprise technology — and lately, I cannot ignore a growing blind spot that business leaders are not talking about enough. We are in the middle of a gold rush. Companies are racing to build AI-powered products, internal tools, and autonomous agents. The pressure to ship is immense. The excitement is real. But the security infrastructure to protect these systems has not kept pace — and that gap is quietly becoming one of the most significant business risks of our time.
AI Applications Are Not Like Regular Applications
Traditional software has well-understood attack surfaces. You secure the login, patch the servers, scan the code. Enterprises have invested decades building processes around this. AI applications are different. They are dynamic systems that combine language models, autonomous agents, tools that can take real-world actions, knowledge bases full of sensitive data, and cloud infrastructure — all woven together, often built fast by teams under pressure to demonstrate return on investment. They can read files, call application programming interfaces, write to databases, and interact with external services. They do all of this continuously, at scale, often without a human in the loop.
An attack on an AI system does not need to look like an attack. An adversary does not need to break anything. They can simply manipulate the AI into doing what it was already designed to do — but for the wrong person, with the wrong intent.
A Warning From the Field
Earlier this year, security researchers published a detailed account of what happens when an autonomous AI hacking agent is pointed at a production AI platform with no credentials, no insider knowledge, and nothing but a domain name. Within two hours, the agent had mapped the application programming interface surface, identified unprotected endpoints, and chained together multiple vulnerabilities to gain full read and write access to the production database.
The data inside included tens of millions of internal messages, hundreds of thousands of files, and — critically — the system prompts governing how the AI itself behaved. The vulnerability was not exotic. SQL injection is one of the oldest bug classes in software development. The platform had been running in production for over two years. Internal scanners had not flagged it.
The organization involved was not a startup. It was a large, well-resourced institution with world-class technology teams. The gap existed because autonomous hacking agents do not follow checklists. They map, probe, chain findings, and escalate — the same way a skilled attacker would, but at machine speed and continuously.
Here is what this means for your organization: if you have a public-facing AI application, assume it is being probed. The attack surface is not just your login page or your servers. It includes every application programming interface endpoint your AI exposes, every tool your agents can invoke, and the system prompts that govern how your AI behaves. Those prompts are now a target. Rewriting them silently — without a code change or a deployment — is enough to redirect what your AI tells your employees or your customers. Security researchers now describe system prompts as high-value crown jewel assets. Most organizations are not treating them that way.
What Wiz Is Betting On
That is the gap Wiz, which completed its acquisition by Google in March 2026, has moved to close. The timing is notable: these announcements arrive just as Wiz becomes part of a larger platform, and they reflect a clear architectural bet on what AI security actually requires.
The first is the Wiz AI Application Protection Platform, or AI-APP. It connects the dots across every layer of an AI system — the model, the tools it can use, the data it can access, the cloud infrastructure it runs on, and the real-time activity happening across all of them. The goal is to surface the attack paths that only become visible when you see everything simultaneously. This is a graph-based approach: security context derived from understanding how components relate, not just scanning them in isolation.
The second announcement covers three specialized agents that Wiz has given color-coded names reflecting their roles in the security lifecycle. The Red Agent plays the attacker: it probes your own AI applications the way a sophisticated adversary would, reasoning through application logic, chaining vulnerabilities, and validating whether a risk is genuinely exploitable. The Green Agent is the fixer: once a risk is identified, it traces the problem to its root cause, identifies ownership, and generates specific remediation steps — including opening pull requests directly in code. The Blue Agent is the investigator: when a threat is detected at runtime, it correlates signals across cloud activity, workload behavior, and identity data to produce a clear verdict on whether something is a real attack or a false alarm.
Together, these agents form a continuous loop: find the risk, fix it, detect and investigate threats in real time. The architectural argument behind all of it is that AI risk only becomes visible when you can see all the layers simultaneously — infrastructure, model, data, identity, and runtime — and understand how they connect.
Who Else Is in This Space
Wiz is not alone, and the shape of the competitive landscape tells you something about where the market is. Established platform vendors — Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike — are extending existing cloud security portfolios into AI workloads. They bring enterprise relationships and breadth, but AI security is additive to their core business, not the core bet. Pure-play specialists like Protect AI, HiddenLayer, Prompt Security, and Pillar Security are built specifically for the AI attack surface — model scanning, adversarial testing, prompt layer protection — but they require organizations to integrate yet another point solution into an already crowded stack. Orca Security sits closest to Wiz in architecture, competing on the cloud security graph itself.
The presence of so many pure-play vendors is itself a signal: the AI-specific attack surface is real enough and distinct enough that a category of companies has formed around it. The question for a CIO or chief technology officer is not which vendor has the best feature list. It is whether AI security gets treated as a first-class concern embedded in the platform already governing cloud posture and identity, or as a separate tool someone has to remember to check. For organizations already running Wiz, the Google acquisition makes that consolidation argument stronger. For those not in the ecosystem, the calculus is less obvious — and the pure-play specialists may be worth a look precisely because they are not trying to be everything.
Three Questions Business Leaders Should Be Asking
You do not need to become a security expert. But you do need to ask the right questions of your teams and technology partners. First, if your organization is building or deploying AI applications — internal tools, customer-facing agents, anything that connects AI models to sensitive data or operational systems — ask where security sits in the process. Is it being designed in, or added after the fact?
Second, recognize that AI security is not just an information technology problem. The confidential data inside an AI knowledge base, the system prompts that govern how your AI behaves, the tools your agents can invoke — these are business assets. They carry business risk. They deserve the same governance attention as any other critical system.
Third, understand that the attacker landscape is changing. The same AI capabilities your teams are deploying to build products are being used by adversaries to find vulnerabilities faster, chain them more creatively, and operate at a scale that human attackers cannot match. The asymmetry that has always favored attackers — they only need to find one weakness — is being amplified by AI on both sides.
The simplest rule of thumb: do not deploy any AI application — internal or customer-facing — without your chief information security officer in the conversation first. Not after launch, not during a post-mortem. Before.
Wiz enters its Google chapter with strong product momentum and an architectural argument — graph-based, context-first AI security — that maps well to how these attacks actually unfold. The Google acquisition brings distribution and infrastructure at a scale Wiz could not reach independently, but also raises a legitimate question: will Wiz remain a genuine multicloud platform, or will integration gravity pull it toward Google Cloud preference over time? Google has committed publicly to multicloud support across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. That commitment will be tested as the combined roadmap matures.
For organizations not yet in the Wiz ecosystem, the more immediate question is simpler: do you know where your system prompts are stored, who can write to them, and whether anyone is watching? If the answer is no, that is where to start — before the next autonomous agent finds it for you.
