The equity market and the contract market are pricing two different questions right now, and only one of them sets your Q3 memory bill.

SK Hynix and Samsung dropped again this week, dragging South Korea's Kospi index down roughly 10 percent in a single session and putting the index about 45 percent below its June high, with the decline spreading to Kioxia and a run of Japanese and Taiwanese suppliers. CNBC called it a Nasdaq-to-Kospi feedback loop that keeps tripping circuit breakers on both sides of the Pacific.

None of that shows up in TrendForce's pricing survey. Conventional DRAM contract prices are still forecast to rise 13 to 18 percent quarter over quarter in Q3 2026, and NAND flash another 10 to 15 percent, with the increases driven by AI server and data center demand rather than consumer devices. Samsung and SK Hynix have told customers directly that the shortage could extend past 2027.

A Stock Chart Is Not a Procurement Signal

Buyers negotiating server contracts for the back half of 2026 are working from allocation calendars, not ticker symbols. Samsung's own preliminary Q2 operating profit came in at roughly $58 billion, up more than 1,800 percent year over year, on the same week its stock fell nearly 7 percent. Investors are repricing a growth rate they think cannot continue. Fabs are not repricing wafer allocation, because the wafer allocation problem was never about investor sentiment. It was about HBM production displacing roughly three regular memory wafers for every one it uses, a dynamic this publication has tracked since the Kioxia NAND coverage in June.

That gap between what the market is punishing and what the fab is still allocating is the story for a technology buyer. A 45 percent equity drawdown looks like relief, but it comes from a different market moving on different information. Reading it as a signal about your own Q3 or Q4 hardware budget is the mistake.

The Trigger Wasn't in Seoul

Trace the selloff back and it starts with Meta, not Korea. On July 1, reports that Meta was building a business to resell its excess AI compute capacity sent Meta shares up nearly 9 percent while Micron, AMD, and Nvidia all sold off the same day. Meta is carrying a 2026 capex outlook of $125 billion to $145 billion, most of it tied to AI data centers, and a hyperscaler with enough spare capacity to become a seller implies the market had been overestimating how much of that spend would keep flowing straight to chipmakers and memory suppliers.

The equity selloff is a bet that hyperscaler capex growth slows. The contract price is a bet that fab capacity stays scarce through 2027. Both can be right at once.

Micron fell 13 percent, Intel and Applied Materials each dropped about 10 percent, and AMD lost 7 to 8 percent in the same window Samsung and SK Hynix sold off in Seoul. The synchronized timing, hitting U.S. chipmakers, Korean memory makers, and Japanese equipment suppliers within days of each other, is the signature of a positioning unwind across the whole AI trade, not a demand problem specific to any one company.

Two Markets, One Supply Chain

Nothing here says the equity selloff is wrong or the contract forecast is wrong. They can both hold. Investors are pricing whether Meta, and eventually the other hyperscalers, keep buying compute at 2025 and early 2026 rates. Samsung and SK Hynix are still allocating wafers against orders placed months ago, for HBM4 volumes that Nvidia and its qualified suppliers locked in before this quarter's volatility started.

A CIO watching Samsung's stock chart and waiting for memory prices to soften is reading the wrong instrument.

Meta Compute, not the Kospi, is the signal worth tracking. It tests whether hyperscaler capex slows, which is the only thing that would move contract memory pricing before 2027.

If your 2026 infrastructure budget assumed this selloff would soften your memory bill, pull your supplier's actual allocation letter for Q3 before you rely on it. The stock chart and the purchase order are no longer telling the same story.
