Forty-five points separate Microsoft AI's newest image model from the top of the Arena text-to-image leaderboard, and CEO Mustafa Suleyman posted the gap himself within the hour, calling the No. 2 finish a fantastic moment for a team that has now published this category of announcement four times since October 2025. MAI-Image-2.6 lands behind OpenAI's GPT Image 2 and ahead of xAI's Grok Imagine Image 2.0 by 20 points, a result Arena's own account framed as a jump from MAI-Image-2.5's current position at No. 10 (Arena, 2026).

A Score That Barely Moved Fell Seven Places
MAI-Image-2.5 debuted at No. 3 on Arena's text-to-image leaderboard on May 26, 2026, with a score near 1,254 (Microsoft AI, 2026). Ten weeks later, Arena's own comparison chart for the MAI-Image-2.6 launch places MAI-Image-2.5 at No. 10 with a score of 1,256, two points higher than its debut (Arena, 2026). The model got marginally better by Arena's own measure and fell seven spots anyway, because seven new entrants filled the gap above it. Arena confirmed as much in its August 7, 2026 changelog, which lists new text-to-image additions arriving weekly (Arena, 2026).
A leaderboard position is relative to whoever else showed up that week. A deployment count is not.
Every MAI-Image Launch Opens With the Same Number Type
MAI-Image-1 debuted at No. 9 in October 2025. MAI-Image-2 debuted at No. 3 on March 19, 2026, live on MAI Playground the same day, with Microsoft Foundry access following two weeks later, on April 2 (Microsoft AI, 2026). MAI-Image-2.5 debuted at No. 3 on May 26, then reached developers in Foundry on June 2, one week after the Arena score published (Microsoft AI, 2026). MAI-Image-2.6 debuted at No. 2 today, with Playground access immediate and Foundry access, in Microsoft's own words, arriving next week.
The gap between leaderboard rank and paying-customer access has shrunk from two weeks to roughly one across three consecutive releases. That compression is real progress, and it says the MAI Superintelligence team is tightening its own release engineering. It does not answer a separate question: once a developer can reach the model through Foundry, how many do.
The Number That Still Hasn't Shown Up
No launch post owes a usage number on day one. Revenue and deployment figures take quarters to materialize for any product, and holding an announcement to that standard proves nothing. MAI-Image-2 is five months old. MAI-Image-2.5 is more than two months old. Microsoft has published follow-up material on both, including pricing updates, a Flash variant, and an OpenRouter integration, and none of it has included a deployment count, an application programming interface call volume, or a revenue figure attached to the image line (Microsoft AI, 2026). The number has had time to show up. It has not.
The nearest public number comes from a partner rather than from Microsoft. OpenRouter's chief executive said nine million developers on the platform could reach the model through their existing integration once OpenRouter added MAI-Image-2.5 in June (Microsoft AI, 2026). That figure describes OpenRouter's platform reach, a different measurement than how many of those developers call the model in production.
Arena tells you what blind reviewers preferred last week. It never tells you who is paying to use the model this week.
Unknowns and Uncertainties
Whether Foundry access for MAI-Image-2.6 lands on the promised weekly timeline, given that the equivalent promise for MAI-Image-2.5 shortened from a stated two weeks to an actual one. Whether OpenRouter's routing volume for MAI-Image-2.5 becomes public at any point, since no source reviewed here discloses it. Whether MAI-Image-2.5's slide to No. 10 reflects a real quality gap against newer entrants, or a leaderboard that added seven models in ten weeks.
What Happens Next
Does Microsoft publish a Foundry deployment number for any MAI-Image model before MAI-Image-2.7 arrives. Does the access lag keep compressing until Arena rank and Foundry availability land the same day. Does MAI-Image-2.5's continued fall down the leaderboard start showing up in how Microsoft frames the next release, or does each announcement reset the comparison to the newest model instead.
