I sat in a few Zoom briefings when the assistant was still called IQ. The pitch was meeting intelligence: transcript, recap, next steps from the call you were already on. The gap after those rooms was always the same. The answer lived in Confluence, Jira, or Slack, and IQ did not have a clean way to read those systems with the permissions the source already enforced. I have not run Onyx in a customer hall and I was not in a briefing on this deal.
Zoom later renamed IQ to AI Companion. Companion can summarize a call and, with the paid Custom AI Companion add-on, reach a short list of systems such as Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, and Google Drive. That still leaves the page and the ticket that explain why the call happened. Agents that are supposed to finish the work after the meeting need those sources.
Onyx, formerly Danswer, was built for that job. It started in 2023, went through Y Combinator in winter 2024, and raised a $10 million seed in March 2025 led by Khosla Ventures and First Round Capital. The software indexes more than fifty workplace systems, answers with whatever model the customer already runs, and can live in a virtual private cloud, a data center, or an air-gapped hall. Co-founders Yuhong Sun and Chris Weaver posted the Zoom news on September 23. Sun wrote that Zoom is taking work from conversation to completion and that agents need context to do that. Weaver wrote that the product stays open source, model agnostic, app agnostic, and self-hostable.
Zoom has not published a priced release on its newsroom. Named customers in the founder posts include NASA, Ramp, Nebius, and the University of California San Diego. An earlier Onyx seed post also named Netflix and Thales. Those names are vendor and founder claims. Confirm them with your own references if they matter to a purchase.
What Zoom is buying
Zoom owns the conversation. Onyx is the document store next to the conversation, already running for teams that refuse to send confidential files to a vendor cloud. Defense, research, and regulated information-technology shops are the fit with Zoom Phone, Contact Center, and Zoom for Government. A self-hosted index is also a reason those shops do not add a second search product beside Workplace.
The other asset is distribution Zoom would have to rebuild. The community edition is on GitHub. Connectors and permission logic are already in customer Kubernetes clusters. Zoom can keep a paid enterprise edition for security teams and still feed the same retrieval into Companion for Workplace seats.
Onyx does not replace Zoom Revenue Accelerator or Common Room. The value is retrieval plus control.
The promise buyers can test
Tim Banting, who leads research and intelligence work and wrote about the deal on LinkedIn on September 24, said Zoom promised not to touch what makes Onyx work. Firms that handle confidential data never have to share it with an outside vendor, if the self-host path stays real. He also said most buying companies pull new software into their own cloud inside a couple of years, and that a public promise on day one is either a firm pledge or an idea that fades.
Watch the GitHub repository for license changes and for features that only exist in a Zoom-hosted build. Ask whether an air-gapped install still receives the same connectors as the cloud edition. Ask whether model choice still includes weights you run yourself, not only models Zoom already federates for Companion. Put those answers in the contract if the deal depends on them.
If Companion already reaches the systems your agents need, you do not need a second index. If confidential files cannot leave your network, ask Zoom in writing that the current self-host, air-gap, and open-source paths remain available for the life of the subscription, with the same connectors as any Zoom-hosted edition.
Then ask legal to attach that answer to the order form. A founder post is not the control.
Unknowns
Price and close date are not public. Zoom investor relations has not posted the deal next to Common Room or BrightHire. It is not clear whether Onyx stays a separate SKU or becomes a feature inside Custom AI Companion. Those facts change how you budget and how you write the self-host clause.
Start with the repository and the install path you already run, then decide what to keep self-hosted and what you are willing to let Companion retrieve.
