I learned PHP in the early 2000s at community college. I still have a few old static sites that may need a look after this, though they hold nothing sensitive and sit low on the priority list. New tools keep arriving, yet the web still runs on foundational languages like PHP and Python that demand constant watching.
PHP released emergency updates for two critical runtime flaws
On October 21, 2026, the PHP project released emergency updates for two critical flaws in the runtime itself. PHP rates both CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 at 9.2 on the CVSS v4.0 scale. The fixes landed in versions 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12. PHP says there are no complete mitigations and that updating is the only safe choice. All installations that serve web requests are at risk, including PHP-FPM, Apache with mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP, and LiteSpeed. Risk is highest on mod_php, where an unauthenticated request can trigger the issue before any application code runs (PHP, 2026).
These are not plugin or framework bugs. A fully updated WordPress site or a simple custom script remains exposed until the PHP engine underneath is patched and the workers restart. Older branches such as 8.1 and earlier no longer receive official updates from the PHP project. Some distributions and long-term support vendors may supply backports, and the security team published minimal source patches for 7.4, 8.0, and 8.1 to help people building from source (PHP, 2026).
W3Techs reports that PHP is used by 69.3 percent of websites whose server-side programming language can be identified. That installed base means a runtime issue reaches far beyond any single product (W3Techs, 2026).
Cloudflare blocked matching traffic hours before public details
Cloudflare deployed web application firewall rules against the attack patterns starting at 03:02 UTC on October 21, roughly nine hours before public disclosure. The protections cover free and paid plans by default and use both request inspection and a new full-transaction check that looks at the origin response as well. Cloudflare says the rules buy time while operators apply the vendor update, and it continues to monitor for new variants (Cloudflare, 2026).
Patching a language runtime across production clusters is rarely instant. Legacy dependencies, custom extensions, and full regression testing can take days. Malicious scans do not wait. With origin servers locked to accept traffic only from the provider's ranges, the edge layer closes the direct path.
For this pair of flaws, apply the fixed PHP versions now, keep the edge rules in block mode, and verify that direct access to origin addresses is closed. Check your PHP version on every internet-facing property. Confirm the Cloudflare managed rulesets (or the equivalent at your edge provider) are active and blocking. Then schedule the runtime upgrade through normal validation paths. The edge layer gives the engineering team the hours needed to test without leaving the site open.
