New Comm Forum : Shel Holtz talks about Social Media and Crisis Communications Revisited

I was at Society for New Communications Research SNCR's  New Comm Forum last month where Shel Holtz delivered the closing keynote of the opening day at the Society for New Communications Research New Communications Forum on Monday, April 27, 2009.

SNCR NewComm Forum 2009

For new comers like me it was full of details for what every company should be doing and what has changed from the traditional way of public relations. Shel Gave a lot of examples of recent Crises and also reasons why companies should use social media for crisis communications. I loved his advice on how blogs are a prerequisite because the media reads them and also why "media should be released into the wild" to get to a larger audience. As part of the presentation Shel also illustrated a good example of @CDCEmergency working hard to put out good and timely information on the H1n1 "Swine flu" .

His closing advice :

  • Communicate well to employees and use them to spread the word.
  • Drill and practice crisis communications through the entire organization

I love this timing but it does cause a disagreement in my house. My wife prefers to fly Eithad due to the timings. My wife's viewpoint is that it is difficult to sleep on the Emirates flight since it starts in the morning. I enjoy the morning flight. My game plan is to sleep less for a few days to my Emirates flight. Once on the flig
